Project Name: House Vader
Location: Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia
Design: Andrew Maynard
Awards: Vision Awards 2009
Vader House is an extension of an existing Victorian house in Fitzroy.
The extension is a steel structure that covers the side wall exceptionally high, built before the height restrictions, restoring the interior spaces, which leads to high domestic flat, folded, allowing double height ceilings, a mezzanine level and ultimately a more spacious interior. The patio, located in the center of the field, ensures that the entire space is used. The boundary between internal and external environments is barely distinguishable, there is a visual continuity between the rooms, this is achieved through the use of double doors. The position of the courtyard also provides abundant natural light and ventilation. The open nature and seemingly simple Vader House reveals itself to become a complex and ambiguous. The wooden deck in the courtyard lies a pool that is exposed when it opens. In the same way a bridge with wooden floor lies a basement that extends the space when the deck is running. “The refined material and colorful palette expansion contrasts with the dark brick terrace where it arises. These two opposing forms are linked by a glass corridor along the northern boundary wall, framing a courtyard “AM
